Discover Cuba differently in 7 days (Varadero to Havana)

Day 4 (Havana to Guanabo)

I take advantage of the morning to take a last tour of this wonderful city teeming with life. I buy peanuts on the street. Each package costs 1 CUP ($0.06). I stock up, the paper packaging is very ingenious and ecological.

I see the Capitol for the last time, which has been given a makeover. There is now gold on the dome.

I say goodbye to my hosts who were very kind during my stay. Lucia gave me Cuban coffee every morning for free. The other tourists in the house had breakfast for 5 CUC ($7). It's too expensive for me!!! I prefer to eat a hot ham bread (pan con jamón caliente) for 5 CUP ($0.06). I find my bike which was in a parqueo in front of my house the lady wanted to charge me 5 CUC ($7) for parking the bike. I told her that I only had a 3 CUC and she accepted my offer. I get back on the road, what a joy!!! I try to take a slightly different path, but I return to the place where I had found a pineapple on the seaside. This time I enjoy sardines bought the day before in Havana for 1.60 CUC ($2.25). It's a good dinner!! It’s a change from ham!

I meet a Cuban who recycles aluminum cans. It's not very profitable, a big bag like the one on the left can bring in about 30 CUP ($1.80)

I meet another Cuban a little later and I can't help but ask him for a little photo. He was a very built man...

I finally arrive at Playa Megano near Guanabo to take a first little swim in the sea. Finally the temperature allows it!!!

I get back on the road and finally arrive in Guanabo. I find myself a nice room for 20 CUC ($28). It's old-fashioned but I like it! My hosts Nelson and Nancy are very friendly.

The hot water system is really very ingenious...it looks like a small coffee maker. The water is boiling instantly.

I have time to enjoy the beach which is located 50 meters from my room. This is the view when I leave my room.

The beach is not so bad, you can rent chairs for 2 CUC ($2.80). I enjoy the day. I buy fries for 1.50 CUC ($2.10) then a Daiquiri for 3 CUC ($4.20)

The weather is nice and warm at last. Long live the holidays!!! In the evening I will have another plate of roast chicken with rice (pollo asado con arroz) for 30 CUP (1.80$)

I'm going back to eating donuts for 0.15 CUC ($0.20)

Beautiful day filled with sunshine, it was very good. You have to enjoy life before it flies away or gets messed up . RIP :( NB The verb enjoy is used 4 times in this text...oops now 5! What are you waiting for to enjoy it? Oh no!!!! 6 times!

I just learned that my friend Dominic Brouillet died at the age of 43.
