The covered bridge
HISTORICAL
The Saint-Edgar covered bridge was built in 1938 at the request of the founding priest of the parish, Joseph-Edgar Miville (1887-1968). Its construction facilitated the settlement and development of the communities of Saint-Edgar and Robidoux, located on either side of the Petite Rivière Cascapédia.
The construction of the bridge is part of a great tradition
of civil engineering works that characterized Quebec until
early 1950s. These places of passage will have allowed

In 1948, an exceptional flood put the whole thing to the test
of the structure and causes significant damage. A
parishioner will have a statuette of
the Virgin on a beam in order to subsequently protect the
bridge and its users.
The bridge will be badly damaged by the floods of
December 2010 which will force the removal of the bridge from its
original location in order to restore it from top to bottom
and then return it to its original location at
fall 2014.
The Saint-Edgar bridge was classified as a heritage building in
2009 by the Quebec government.
ARCHITECTURE
The Saint-Edgar covered bridge
Counts among the covered bridges
the most interesting in Quebec. It is a
remarkable example of a structure of
“Quebec Town” type, a variant
of the model patented in 1820 by
American architect, Ithiel ToWn.
It is characterized by its structural strength.
resulting from an arrangement of beams
placed diagonally to which are
added vertical reinforcement posts.
In Quebec, this structure is recognized
for its solidity, its ease of
construction and its lightness.
With a length of 38.38 m and a
5.74 m wide, it is the longest bridge
cover remaining in Gaspésie. Its
central pillar rests on a lot and,
like many Quebec bridges,
The exterior is covered with a paneling of
horizontal boards painted red.
